[...] I must confess I still haven’t read the EU report on FLOSS impact yet, as I was saving it for my next long-haul flight due in a couple of days. Big thanks to Roberto Galoppini for pointing out how the report is mentioning Orixo, the Open Source consortium we launched a few years ago together with some of the most active companies in Open Source XML: As an example of a more recent development in business models, which could provide a future scenario for SMEs in general even beyond the FLOSS sector is the Orixo network of mainly small and micro-enterprises in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, UK and Switzerland specialising in massive mission-critical web server applications based around customising the FLOSS web server Apache and related Java/XML technology (such as Cocoon) for large users. Orixo works by each national SME member acquiring national customers and partners in other countries supporting each other’s clients. [...]

Welcome to Japan :-)

I suppose you were inspired by the "Richard QUEST"'s *JAPAN NOW* on CNN. Well, as for the railroad pass, I recommend you to use SUICA -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suica

Drop me an e-mail (or please use party@a.o. -- I am subscribing there) if you are looking for a delicious sushi bar in Tokyo. Cheers,

Staying in a ryokan is definetely recommended. When we went (1997) there was an English Speaking tourist office near the main Tokyo train station who would ring up a book the ryokan for you. Also the Japan Rail Pass was the best investment we made - save you alot of money than paying the full fare in country. Kyoto is a fantastic place to visit - lots of history and culture and Nikko was beautiful forest with lots of incredible temples.

Google definitely has Japan maps, though that does not mean you'll be able to read them:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=tokyo,+japan&ie=UTF8&z=14&ll=35.669998,139.770004&spn=0.037165,0.076046&om=1

You might print them out for your taxi driver though.

Google Maps actually has much information on Japan but you have to read Japanese to use it properly. http://maps.google.co.jp

My suggestion is to try getting a copy of Lonely Planet Japan.
Most of the better guides on Japan are in Japanese so without a hefty amount of Japanese skills or a native to guide you, those guides will be closed.
